lakes and mountains holidays

Explore the great outdoors – take in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the stunning scenery of a lakes and mountains holiday – it can be as active or relaxing as you wish. Combine it with sightseeing and visiting places of interest along the way.

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy – all these countries offer varied lakes and mountains experiences.

WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE CAN I EXPECT?…

If you like to get out and about in the fresh air, exploring either independently, taking things at your own pace, or in a small walking group, then you will love a lakes and mountains holiday.

WHEN CAN I DO THAT?…

May to September are the most popular months, but it’s also possible in April or October, depending on the altitude of the area you are visiting. Please remember that some mountain chairlifts, cable-cars etc may not be open early or late season.

DO I NEED ANYTHING SPECIAL TO DO THAT?…

If you plan to do some serious mountain walking, you will need suitable footwear – sturdy mountain hiking boots – plus layered clothing to take account of the variable weather conditions. Do take something waterproof, high factor sun cream, a hat to cover head and neck.

WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND?…

Try a week’s stay in the traffic-free resort of Wengen, in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland. Buy a 6 day ‘Jungfraubahnenpass’ which covers your transport up and down and between the mountains of the local area, including cable-cars and mountain railways between Wengen, Muerren and Grindelwald. The scenery and varied activities available will amaze you.

WHAT DOES IT COST?…

Budget to spend at least £800 per person, including return flights, rail transfers to/from your resort, half board accommodation.

WHO ELSE ENJOYS DOING THAT?…

David Bellamy, botanist, is a great lover of this type of holiday.

Other Things To Know (Passports, Visas, Health, Security)
